Junk journaling is a creative practice of making unique, personalized journals from "junk" or discarded materials.
The junk I collect often comes from my daily life: receipts, stickers, junk mail, old magazines, thrift store finds, fabric scraps, and more. I often incorporate personal ephemera like ticket stubs, cards, brochures from travel, and handwritten notes. I also gravitate towards vintage elements like tags from clothing, as this is something i see often in my line of work.
To me, it’s a form of art therapy, allowing me to express myself, collect memories, and focus on creation for creation’s sake. Allowing me to overcome perfection and defy expectations, I never know what the next page will look like. gathering diverse items, layering them, and adding interesting visual elements to create a truly unique spread gives me something small to look forward to, even on the hardest of days. The themes encapsulated in these journals are often deeply personal.
the emphasis of junk journaling on collage, mixed media, and upcycling resonates with my work as a fashion and costume designer, focusing on taking materials that already exist and creating compelling artwork with them. i often use junk journaling as a form of conceptual research and moodboarding for my design work, too.
I am honored to share the following look inside my brain - the chaos, the feelings, and the daily happenings - through the beauty of physical, tangible media.
